June 10, 2026 —Nearly two years after historic flooding tore through Spencer, Iowa, a faith-based disaster relief organization is helping one local family start from the ground up.
The floodwaters are long gone, but the damage remains for many Clay County families. This summer Mennonite Disaster Services is stepping in to offer help to homeowners.
“They are going to be repairing about 25 other homes that have been flood affected and vetted through our program,” said Megan Hentges, Long-Term Recovery Group director.
For one Spencer woman, the help goes even further. Her home was so badly damaged it could not be saved. “This was her existing property and her home had floodwater, groundwater and sewer water and was deemed unrepairable. They tore it down leaving an empty lot,” Hentges said.
A new home is now rising on that empty lot. It will house Danelle McCord, her disabled mother and her daughter.
Mennonite Disaster Services is supported by funding from Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies through its Disaster Relief & Recovery domain.
